I am trying to install the component into lazarus but somehow there is a conflict with some units in other components. Is there another serial comm component available out there?

Check out the Synapse Package that is allready included in the CT installation.

Use the Synaser.pas. This is the part of the Synapse library that performs Serial I/O.
